For Father’s Day, I put together a different kind of cake for my Hubby. The kids helped me pick out some of his favorite snacks along with a 12 pack of soda and come up with a silly poem to go with them. We stacked it all up and added some ribbon to make it look like a cake. It was an easy yet thoughtful gift. My husband loved it.
I am sure you have seen these all over Pinterest. Most are made with beer cans which would be a good 21st birthday gift. My Hubby loves Mountain Dew though so that’s what we used. I knew he would want to be able to share it with the kids and they are way below the age of 21 so it worked out for everyone.
Here is what you will need to make a Soda Can Cake:
glue gun and glue sticks
12 pack soda or beer
An assortment of snacks
8″ round cake board or cardboard
6″ round cake board or cardboard
Before gluing anything down, practice stacking everything up and arranging it to see how it looks. Use the 8″ cake board as a base and make the bottom layer all cans to make it sturdy. Once you get an idea, start by using the glue gun to glue the bottom layer of cans to the board. Place a single blob of glue on the bottom of a can, then press it down onto the 8″ cake board. Finish the bottom layer by glueing all of the cans down in a circle.
To start the next layer, glue the 6″ cake board to the top of the bottom layer of cans. To do this apply a small dab of glue on top of each of the cans. I used a can of pringles for the middle of this layer so that there would be something tall to attach the other snacks to. Adhere the can to the board by applying a ring of glue around the bottom. Then arrange the remaining cans around it. As with the first layer, put a small bit of glue on the bottom of the soda cans and attach to the board. I only have 5 cans around the Pringles can in the picture because I dropped one of the cans and it exploded. Eek! Try not to do that. It was messy.
Once all the cans are on the board, it is time to attach the snacks. The snacks we used are beef jerky, pistachios, peanut M&Ms, Hersheys Nuggets, and Skittles. Attach each of the bags by running a small line of glue along the back of each bag and sticking them to the Pringles can along the top of the soda cans. It ends up looking like a third layer of cake. For the topper, as you can see we used a bag of Skittles. To do this, apply a small bit of glue to the top of the Pringles can and stick the bag of Skittles to it.
To finish it up, wrap some ribbon around each of the layers using tape or more glue to attach it. We have a tradition of writing a silly poem with all the names of the snacks. It cheesy but hilarious. I printed the poem out and attached it to the front with some double sided tape.
Ta Da! That is how you make a soda can cake. Now go pick up a 12 pack and get your cake on!
